The Jewish Innovation
Broadway in Israel is sponsoring Live Theater for the English Speaking Community. Our first endeavor was to create The Tzfat Community Theater. We opened in December 2015 and have just mounted our latest production “The High School” by Arnold Perl. We have been invited to perform it for The Klezmer Festival August 15-17. Our next project is the first English version in Israel of Mel Brook’s “The Producers”. It will tour Israel and be seen in Jerusalem, Jaffe, Tel Aviv, Netanya, Haifa, Beersheva, Rehovot, Modiin, Zichron Yakov, Raanana, Ramat Aviv and Tzfat from September 27-December 4. We are currently preparing to bring the highly acclaimed play “Foreclosure” or “Yelling At Women Walking Their Dogs” by Raymond J. Barry to Israel for a March run. We are planning workshops for Israeli Actors during this run led by Mr. Barry who formerly was In Israel with The Open Theater and Joseph Chaiken.
The Impact
When I arrived on the ‘Theater scene’ here in Israel I sensed the same energy as the Broadway and Off-Broadway scene in New York. When I began my career in the 70’s, we were involved in a dynamic synergy of new ideas and experimental theater that shook the audiences. The infrastructure was there already and the Economics of the time was favorable to Artists.
Here in Israel the fervency is deeper, and the talent pool vastly eager. The Economics are the challenge. Many Artists forsake their dream and can’t fulfill their talent. Broadway in Israel seeks to provide English speakers an opportunity to experience Live Theater at a Professional level. At the same time we are training English speaking Actors in the craft of Acting and Directing so as to continue the traditions of the New York Stage.
Please continue to support Broadway in Israel!
A contribution of $100 or more will garner free tickets to any performance for yourself and a guest
Thank you all for helping to bring live Professional Theater to the English Speaking population of Israel. Both “The Producers” and “Foreclosure” will be presented with Hebrew subtitles so all of Israel can enjoy the shows.
What Will You Do with the Money?
A project like this has a budget of around $36000.
This includes:
Rental of appropriate space.
Production costs for performances including:
Lights, sets, costumes, Hair and Make up technicians.
Costs for printing Playbills
Web creation and administration
Administrative costs
Publicity Photos and Video Equipment Rental
Transportation Costs in Israel can be rather large.
The costs of running the Tzfat Theater is economical compared to the sponsorship of ‘The Producers” which entails substantial costs of fuel, Housing, per Diem for meals etc.
The Producing of “Foreclosure” will be even more daunting as we are bringing a cast of three from the U.S. and providing Housing, Transportation, Meals. All costs for Theater Rental, Lighting and Sound Equipment, Publicity, Marketing and hiring of qualified Stage Manager, Electrician, Sound Technician, Building of Sets, Front of House Personnel etc. This will entail Salaries for the technical staff as well as a small Honorarium for the Artists involved.
