“Sharing food is the first act through which slaves become free human beings. One who fears tomorrow does not offer his bread to others. But one who is willing to divide his food with a stranger has already shown himself capable of fellowship and faith, the two things from which hope is born. That is why we begin the seder by inviting others to join us. That is how we turn affliction into freedom.” – Rabbi Jonathan Sacks z”l
In the opening paragraph of the Haggadah recited at the Seder, we declare: “All who are hungry, let them come and eat.” Our nation is a singular entity, and in order to experience freedom ourselves, we must also ensure that our brothers and sisters have the means to celebrate freedom too.
With this in mind, in preparation for the Passover holiday, it is an age-old Jewish tradition to contribute generously towards funds that ensure that everyone who is in need has the necessary provisions for the holiday—food, matzah, wine, festive clothing, etc.
As Passover approaches, many families in Israel are crushed by the stress of providing for the holiday needs. As ingflation and ever-rippleing effects of the war since October 7th continue to grow, it leaves over 2 million people in Israel to succumb to poverty, among them are orphans, needy families with children, Holocaust survivors, IDF families, and more – and the numbers are growing by the day.
Israel IS the heart of our Jewish freedom, and within it, ALL our brethren should be able to celebrate wholeheartedly!
By donating to our fundraiser, you are providing so much more than a simple meal to these people in need. IT GIVES THE MESSAGE “WE ALL HAVE SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE, TOGETHER.”
The proceeds from this Emunah Project fundraiser will get distributed directly to the very many families that truly need our help to have a kosher Pesach seder this year.
Giving charity specifically for Passover is known as maot chitim or kimcha d’Pischa (Pesach flour). The exact translation of Maot Chitim is “Wheat Money”. This is a centuries-old religious custom, which in It’s traditional form, was to gather wheat to provide to the poor as a response to the insufficiency of kosher flour needed to bake Matzah. During that time, poor families had to rationalize the amount of Matzah eaten, or survive without it altogether. Raising money for the less privileged families thus became an obligation. Today, we fulfill this mitzvah by distributing to those in need through funding Passover meals and assisting with the purchase of Kosher for Passover staples.
During this auspicious time, it is critical that all Jews from all walks of life commemorate Yetziyat Mitzrayim as they join in a festive seder meal.
We urge you Am Yisrael, to unite and help needy families in Israel by donating for Maot Chitim today!
