Help Us Film A Documentary Uncovering The Silenced Roots of Puerto Rico’s Jewish Communities
After the tragic events of October 7th, we believe that the Jewish community needs to be stronger than ever. It is imperative that we remind the world of our history, share our stories, and introduce the protagonists who have shaped our narrative. Have you ever wondered what unites Jewish people around the world?
Welcome to the REEMERGE PROJECT where we passionately believe in the transformative power of storytelling to shape perspectives, kindle connections, and foster bridges within the global Jewish community.
We invite you to delve into a documentary project that transcends the screen.
This compelling documentary, comprised of 9 episodes in Latin America, is the brainchild of award-winning filmmakers Dani Rotstein, Isaac Feder and Patricio Serna.
Together, we embark on a poignant exploration of the struggles and triumphs of emerging Jewish communities in Latin America (Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Costa Rica and New Mexico).
Through intimate conversations with community members, Dani Rotstein guides us on the journey of many to discover and reclaim their Jewish faith. We explore the challenges they are facing as they strive for acceptance and a sense of belonging.
Join us on this exhilarating storytelling experience where history becomes a bridge between cultures, and the voices of Jewish communities in Latin America rise to inspire and connect.
Our inaugural episode will be set in Puerto Rico. While Dani Rotstein grew up in New Jersey, he would always visit his family in sunny San Juan. He celebrated many Bar Mitzvahs and recently attended his cousin’s wedding there. But, little did he know that there was another group of people that nobody knew about or spoke about: Puerto Ricans with Jewish roots, who have come together to form their own community in the mountains of the island far away from the mainstream Jewish communities of the city of San Juan.
We believe that by shedding light on the different communities on the island, their relationship with one another can provide insight and inspiration to how communities could and should interact with one another all over the globe.
As such, this documentary serves a dual purpose: to challenge existing opinions and perspectives, and to connect people through history, identity, and community.
Your contributions will be vital to defray the production costs of the documentary, and we look forward to you getting involved with a contribution.
We will put in all of our effort and enthusiasm, because we believe from the heart that this will mark a before and after.
Join and become an integral part of the Jewish future in Latin America.
Prior to the REEMERGE PROJECT, Dani Rotstein, Ofer Laszewicki, and Felipe Wolokita achieved critical acclaim with their documentary entitled Xueta Island. In this captivating film, they delve into the intriguing legacy of the Xuetas (pronounced Chuetas): a distinctive community of Catholic families on the Spanish island of Mallorca who are the descendants of the Inquisition-era Crypto-Jewish population.
