SCHOOL MOTTO
Knowledge is power

SCHOOL MISSION
To create future self-reliant and vibrant families that will be competitive in all developed fields world over.

This project is focusing on Nursery and primary school children ages 4-15.

In Namutumba, Jewish families lived 75 kilometers away from the only Jewish primary school in the region, therefore young children who still needed parental supervision were unable to attend classes. This forced them to either remain home all day or go to other schools where they were forced to study on Shabbat and couldn’t study Hebrew. In addition the transportation and boarding costs at Hadassah are very costly, prohibiting enrollment from poor families.

It is for the above listed reasons that Tikkun Olam is trying to help the Abayudaya community fight illiteracy and teach both Judaic studies and basic education for future community leaders.

The Impact

Helping struggling Jewish communities around the world makes us a stronger people. The Jews at Namutumba Synagogue, founded in 1919 in the Eastern part of Uganda, were silenced by their government and forced to convert to other religions for many years. In 1986, when their rights were restored, the community began growing and encouraging both civic and religous education of their young children. With growth comes the need for more places to teach a rising generation of Jewish leaders closer to home.

The first $2,000 was fundraised by campers Yoash met in the US while he was a staff member at Berkshire Hills Eisenberg Camp. With this money, the community joined together and built the schoolhouse. That momentum and the leadership of Yoash, the school’s director, helped the community unite and gain confidence in their abilities. Now the community needs funds for initial start-up costs. Your donation will help them further their progress and focus on the work of teaching and learning!

What Will You Do with the Money?

The schoolhouse has already been built and 300 students have enrolled for the first term, which is already underway, with 12 teachers on staff. Tikkun Olam’s leaders have prepared a budget of yearly income from registration fees to pay for teachers’ salaries and annual supplies. However, there are many one-time expenses to get a new school up and running.

Tikkun Olam Primary School

I am setting this page up for my friend, Yoash Mayende, who built the school and is currently the director. I met Yoash at Brandeis Collegiate Institute, a month-long camp for Jewish young adults interested in exploring Jewish practice through creativity, art, and international community. I am so happy that while I was there I spent time listening to Yoash talk about his community in Uganda where he has been working tirelessly to help his community thrive. Yoash sees that the best way to empower the next generation of his community is through education. He is a truly remarkable person who I am honored to call a friend.
