Everyone matters and can make a difference.
There are over 160 gap year programs for Jewish students who want to spend a year in Israel. There are very few options, though, for Jewish college-bound students who have learning differences and/or social challenges.
In order to provide these students with the tools necessary to transition successfully to college, we encourage these young adults to participate in a gap year program that is tailored to meet their specific needs. In 2015, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (recognized the need for supportive program and pioneered the Yozma Program.
What is Yozma?
Yozma is a specialized track within Nativ: the College Leadership Program in Israel. Nativ was created in 1981 as a way to immerse young adults in the rich and diverse society and history of Israel. In its pilot year, Yozma had two participants who successfully completed the year and are off to college. In the fall of 2016, Yozma will have five participants as a part of Nativ.
Yozma offers these young adults a safe, inclusive, and secure environment where participants can acquire study/life skills, gain self and social confidence, strengthen their Jewish identity, and form a deeper commitment to Israel. They return home and assume the responsibilities of a college curriculum and their community benefits from their active engagement in Jewish life.
With the help of a specialized staff, Yozma participants go on the same trips, leadership seminars, and educational programs as their Nativ peers. The academics and volunteer components are adjusted to accommodate the specific needs of each of the Yozma participants..
Where will your money go?
Creating such a specialized program requires significant funds to cover the cost of additional staff and support. Parents of these young adults are often overburdened with other expenses, making it difficult to pay tuition. That is why we are asking for your immediate help so these five young adults will have the same opportunity as their peers to live and learn in Israel.
